The nonlinear diocotron mode in a pure electron plasma
The nonlinear diocotron mode, discussed by Fine, Driscoll, and Malmberg @Phys. Rev. Lett. 63, 2232 ~1989!# is characterized by two equations, one describing the frequency of orbiting, the other giving the quadrupole moment, as functions of size and offset. A new analysis, based on the method of moments, which yields equations more general in their content, is presented here. For example, the ne...
متن کاملDiocotron Wave Echoes in a Pure Electron Plasma
Experimental images illustrate spatial Landau damping of an externally launched diocotron mode, and the resulting echo from a second externally launched wave. Filaments at the resonance layer exhibit spiral wind-up during the collisionless damping process, and “unwind” during the echo formation.
متن کاملSecond harmonic autoresonant control of the l=1 diocotron mode in pure-electron plasmas
An oscillator whose frequency is amplitude dependent can be controlled by a drive whose frequency sweeps through a resonance with the oscillator's fundamental frequency. This phenomenon is called autoresonance, and has been previously investigated for drives with frequencies near the oscillator's fundamental or subharmonic frequencies. This paper examines autoresonance for drives at twice the f...
متن کاملElectron plasma orbits from competing diocotron drifts.
The perpendicular dynamics of a pure electron plasma column are investigated when the plasma spans two Penning-Malmberg traps with noncoinciding axes. The plasma executes noncircular orbits described by competing image-charge electric-field (diocotron) drifts from the two traps. A simple model is presented that predicts a set of nested orbits in agreement with observed plasma trajectories.
متن کاملFluid echoes in a pure electron plasma.
Experimental observations of diocotron wave echoes on a magnetized electron column are reported, representing Kelvin wave echoes on a rotating near-ideal fluid. The echoes occur by reversal of an inviscid wave damping process, and the phase-space mixing and unmixing are directly imaged. The basic echo characteristics agree with a simple nonlinear ballistic theory. At late times, the echo is deg...
